First tonery to eighth tonery of ARC ms. 1

Office of the Dead to Lamentations of Jeremiah the Prophet in ARC ms. 1

A note on abbreviation

Of particular interests within the text of m.s. 1 is the abbreviation used throughout. The most common specific abbreviations throughout the text are the omissions of the letters ‘m’ or ‘n’, ‘us’, ‘ui’, and ‘ro’ following the letter ‘p’. Also appearing frequently are general abbreviation markers that do not refer to any specific set of omitted letters and rather simply indicate that a word is abbreviated.

Another Interesting note concerning abbreviation is the rate at which abbreviation occurs throughout the chant. The first time the chant is written there are 13 abbreviated words; the second time 9; the third time 21; the fourth time 13; the alternative fourth time 10; the fifth time 13; the sixth time 20; the seventh time 44; and the eighth and final repetition of the chant has 54 abbreviated words. There is clearly a drastic jump in the amount of abbreviation between the sixth and seventh chants.

[13] Fiant nati ejus in interitum; in generatione una deleatur nomen ejus.
